Son of George and Mary (North) Blackburn.
On 11 Jun 1855 Joshua, 24, married Mary Crump Glass, 29, daughter of Henry and Nancy Dixon, at Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island. They had at least three children.
On 1 Jul 1861 Joshua, a weaver, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Blackstone, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 30 years and 27 days old.
On 21 Oct 1861 he was wounded at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia.
On 28 Jul 1864 Joshua mustered out due to expiration of term of service.
He died on 2 Feb 1891 at Blackstone, Worcester County, Massachusetts, of typhoid. He was 59 years, 7 months and 29 days old.
