Charles enlisted as a Private in Company "D", 1st Maryland Infantry on 1 September 1862, and was discharged on 9 February 1864. Three days later he enlisted in the Regular Army, was assigned as a Hospital Steward, and was detailed to the 19th U.S. Colored Infantry.

He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant of Company "D" of the 19th U.S.C.T. on 1 July 1865 before being mustered out on 15 January 1867. He enlisted again as a Hospital Steward on 1 July 1867, but was discharged on 6 August 1871 as disabled from a "disease of the stomach" contracted during his service.

Charles married Emeline C. Allyn in Bristol on 14 March 1865. After his death at age 44, she received a pension until her remarriage. After her second husband's death, Emeline successfully appealed to have her pension restored.
