Maribel Y. Owen was the oldest daughter of 9-time US National Ladies champion Maribel Vinson Owen and 1929 Canadian Junior Men's champion Guy Owen. Maribel was the US National pairs champion with her partner Dudley Richards. They perished along with coaches, family members including her sister Laurence Owen, and the entire 18 member USA skating team aboard the Sabaena Airline carrying them to the 1961 World Championship in Prague.
