The body of a 20-year-old man who rescued a drowning 9-year-old girl from the Cowlitz River on Friday was recovered this morning.
Allen Heck's body was found at 10:45 a.m., 50 yards from where he was last seen, said Cowlitz County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Nelson.
Heck, of Longview, dived into the river near Kelso to save the struggling child about 3 p.m. Friday. He was last seen handing the child off to a group of people near the shore, witnesses said. The girl's age was wrong in initial reports from the sheriff's office. She is nine, not three.
Heck didn't know the girl, who wandered away from her family and into the water. She was soon swept into an area where the water is 8 to 12 feet deep. Heck was able to hold her above the water until someone could grab her. Then he went under, came back up and went under again. He never resurfaced.
