John's father, Capt. Nathan Noah Elton, died from service in the War of 1812, and from 1818 was raised by his grandfather Joseph Halstead, Sr. a Revolutionary War Veteran. On March 11, 1830, John and Lusina Loomis were married at the Village of Clinton, Oneida County, New York, by Rev. Asahel Strong Norton, Pastor of Clinton, New York Congregational (now Presbyterian) Church. They moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1838 where he was a laborer and baggage agent for the railroad. He helped conceal run away slaves on their way north. By 1860 he was a butcher. He served as a private and company cook for the 30th Michigan Infantry Regiment. John later worked in Edgewood and Effingham, Illinois and 1894 was station agent at Ypsilanti. John and Lusina had children: Samuel 1831, Mary 1832, Emeline 1837, Nancy 1838, Truman 1840, Anna 1843, Caroline 1846 and John 1849. He was a life long Mason.
