Civil War Veteran. Enlisted as a corporal in Saratoga, New York in Company F, 77th New York Infantry on 8 October 1861. According to New York Town Clerk's Register, Fulton County, Bleeker-Perth, "Was in all the campaign battles of the Army of the Potomac for three years; was never in hospital nor wounded during his term of service; was promoted to sergeant; P.O. Address Leeds, Mass."

According to Sheffield's History of Florence, Cornelius caught a cold while fighting the Congregational chapel fire on 13 February 1885.
