Elisha was born of John Frances James from Switzerland Co.,Indiana and Mary A Hunt from Kentucky. He had two brothers Samuel and Joseph. Elisha married Sarah Ann Martin from Tipton Co.,Indiana on 27 Mar 1872 in Tipton Co.,Indiana. They had two sons Theadore Tilton and John Frances. also five daughters,Emma Florence,Olive May ''Ollie'',Mary B ''Mollie'',Nancy Belle ''Nanny'' and Armilda Ann ''Milda. Elisha is my Great Great Great Grandfather.
While in an intoxicated condition. Elisha James a blacksmith residing at Tipton, was crushed to death beneath the wheels of Monon freight train No. 48 at the Clinton Street crossing in this city at 4;15 o'clock Saturday evening. Death coming as a relief to his sufferings a few minutes after being taken from beneath the cars by the train crew.
During the afternoon James was in company with Jonathan Goff who is alleged sold James the liquer which intoxicated him. During the afternoon the local police department was asked to take both men into custody upon the charge of intoxication. But both men suceeded in dodging the officers. The police went to the Goff home on Midway in search of the two men but they could not be found and shortly after returning to police headquarters a call was recieved telling of a mans tragic death. The officers responded to the call and found the ill fated man to be James.
