After immigrating to the US from England at the age 18, James H. Adkins lied abt said he was born in Dagsboro, DE and enlisted in the US Army Company H 1st Regiment, Delaware Infantry on October 14, 1864 for the term of one year as a substitute for a Miles H. Lloyd from S.E.N.W. Fork Hundred Sussex County.
He was admitted to 2nd Div Hospital , Petersburg , VA while fighting near Munsonís Hill, VA with Debility and Rheumatism on December 24, 1864 and transferred to 2nd Div. Hospital at City Point, VA for treatment of Pleurisy till January 3, 1865 when he returned to duty.
He received an invalid pension due to Rheumatism. This started at $8.00 in 1865 and went to $40.00 in 1936 when it ended due to his wife Hannahís death.
