An old and honored resident quietly passes to the great beyond, “A shock of corn fully ripe” for the sickle
George L. Douglass was born in Vermillion county, Illinois April 4th, 1826, and passed away at Lompoc January 18, 1914, after a short illness, and was laid to rest beside his beloved wife, who proceeded him nearly three years ago. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ann Metier in December, 1848. To this union nine children were born, four of whom, J. 0. Douglass, of this city; W. H. Douglass, of King City, California; A. L. Douglass, of Portland, Oregon; and Mrs. E. J. Searls, of Akron, Iowa, survive him. After three sons were born to them, they moved to Decatur county. Iowa, and lived there until October, 1868, when they moved to Vermillion, South Dakota. About twenty-five years ago they came to Lompoc, where they continued to reside until their death. Mr. Douglass was converted about thirty-five years ago and united with the Baptist Church and has always lived a faithful Christian life. When he forget all else he never forgot his religion, or his Dear Savior. Funeral services
were held at the Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, January 20,1914, conducted by Rev, J, D. Smithers, of Santa Barbara, who was a very close friend for many years. Ripe for the transition, a good man has gone to his reward. His great age and consequent infirmities have made his last days, days of pain but he bore all with fortitude. His many friends here mourn with the bereaved family, while all rejoice to know that his sufferings are ended and that he is now safe on the other shore.
