Thomas married Minnie Gerken on June 17, 1899 in Canton, SD. They were the parents of Easter, Helen, James, Sue, and Quincy.
March 24, 1943 - Carroll Times - Funeral rites for T.G. Sawyer, who succumbed to a long illness at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home, 816 Simon Avenue, will be held at 10:30 Saturday morning at the Huffman Funeral Home. The Rev. W.H. Parker will officiate. Burial will be in the Carroll Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home to view the body until the hour of the rites.
James Thomas Grant Sawyer, a brick mason by occupation, had lived in Carroll for twenty-five years. He was born in McHenry County, Illinois, Sept. 4, 1868. When he was less than a year old his parents brought their family to Iowa, arriving at this state in February, 1869.
June 17, 1899, Mr. Sawyer was married to Miss Minnie Gerken at Canton, S.D. In 1913 the family moved to Carroll county from South Dakota. For a number of years Mr. Sawyer was caretaker at the Three Links Park southwest of Lake City. He continued with this work as long as his health permitted.
Surviving are his wife and five children: Mrs. H.F. Ades (Easter), Cedar Rapids; Mrs. S.H. Fobes (Helen), Long Beach, Cailf,; James T. Sawyer, Rockwell City; Mrs. Chester F. Perry (Sue), Des Moines; and Quincy K. Sawyer, a Quartermaster first class in the U.S. Navy, who is somewhere in a rest camp in the South Pacific. He also leaves three brothers, John Sawyer, of California, Ace of Sac City, and Harrie of Carroll, and one sister, Mrs. Hattie Mason of Pocahontas, Iowa.
