Michelle "Shelli" Ann Kazlausky, age 57, of Reynoldsburg, passed away suddenly Saturday, August 21, 2010 while riding in the Pelotonia Bike Tour. Cyclists were invited to meet at the church and ride to Holy Cross Cemetery in honor of Shelli.
She was a loving mother, who enjoyed camping and was an avid biking enthusiast.
She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, The Ohio State University, and was a medical technologist in the oncology lab at Ohio State University Hospital East.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Florence Richert, and son Gregory McMahon.
She was survived by two sons, a brother, five sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shelli's own words on participating in the Pelotonia race:
"It is both exciting and humbling to be involved in such a huge effort as the Pelotonia.
When I signed up in June to ride to Athens, I knew it would be a challenge as I had never been on an organized ride before. I won a playground bike race as a ten year old growing up in Mt. Vernon, Ohio and my closest competitor was my twin sister Patti.
My reasons for riding are many. I am riding in memory of my mother, Florence Richert. She was a seventeen year uterine cancer survivor after having six daughters, her last at age 49. She had surgery and radiation treatments in 1986 and lived to see the births of all fourteen grandchildren.
I'm also riding for my friend and coworker, Irene, who is courageously battling breast cancer now. You are awesome!
I'm riding in memory of Merilee Rausch and Katy Kitsmiller whose lives touched mine in ways they never knew. I'm riding so no others will be diagnosed with cancer.
I work as a medical technologist at Ohio State Univeristy Hospital East and admire all the research being done at the James. I am riding for hope and I am riding because others can't. I struggle every day looking for ways to make a difference."
