Pvt Melville D Clark

Death: Jul. 25, 1872

Melville D. Clark is the son of Jeremiah "Jerry" and Artemisia Clark.

He enlisted into the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry Co: "E" on August 15, 1862 at Union Mills, Erie County, PA. He mustered into rank on August 27, 1862. At some point between the battle of Antietam and the march to the battle of Fredericksburg, Melville developed severe intestinal problems. He was suffering from the intestinal problems while taking part at the battle of Fredericksburg. During the battle of Fredericksburg, VA on December 13, 1862 Melville was shot through the right ankle. The shot entered the front of his ankle joint and exited through the back damaging his tendon. He was treated at Harewood Hospital at Washington D.C. from about December 20, 1862 until September 1, 1863. He then entered Satterlee General Hospital at West Philadelphia on September 24, 1863 where he was treated for about 6 months. He was first transferred into 122nd Co:2 Battalion Veterans Reserve Corp. He was then transferred into the 81st Co: 2 Battalion Veterans Reserve Corp on July 1st 1864. Then transferred into 86th Co: 2 Battalion Veterans Reserve Corp on July 29, 1865. He was honorably discharged on August 14, 1865 at Washington D.C..

Melville married Lois M. Morton on December 23, 1865. The marriage was performed at the Methodist Episcopal church at Concord station, Erie County, PA by Rev. S.D. Lewis. He is the father of Morton M. born February 6, 1869, and Martha A. born October 21, 1870.

Melville's wife remarried to Francis Field on September 14, 1875. Marriage by R.B. Dilworth of the Presbyterian church in Union City.
