A son of George D. and Minerva Hill Boyd, (owners of Boyd's Store and Boyd's Mill in the Sandy Cross area of Rockingham Co.). Tombstone indicates that Samuel was killed in battle near Spottsylvania Courthouse. (One of three brothers who were killed in the Civil War.) Samuel had taken over operation of his fathers store by 1857. He was also a Justice of the Peace. With the coming of the Civil War, he had entered the service as Captain of Company E, 45th NC Regiment, and was later promoted to Colonel.
