Oliver L. Hawk, 79, of Lima, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.
He was born January 28, 1923 in Lafayette, to John and Lena (Hefner) Hawk, both of whom are deceased.
In 1957, he married Juanita Striff, who survives.
Other survivors include two sons: Michael L. (Becky, fiancee) Hawk of Elida and Robert J. (Barbara) Rupert of Lima; two daughters: Pamela G. (Perry) Rumbaugh of Lima and Janice A. Buckmaster of St. Dyer, Indiana; two brothers: Richard (Betty) Hawk of Lafayette and Russell (Carla) Hawk of Lima; four sisters: Mildred Servis of Lima, Mary Barber of Beaverdam, Katherine (George) Herron of Rockport, and Frances (Neil) Tussing of Waynesfield; ten grandcildren: Anita, Shannon, Steven, Robert, Jodi, Melissa, Aaron, Shad, Zachary and Colt; five great-grandchildren: Derek, Shelby, Chandler, Jordan and Rhys.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Clifton Jacob Hawk and John Junior Hawk; and by five sisters: Margaret Hawk, Helen Lawrence, Edith Hawk, Bertha Holt and Dertha Nell Hawk.
Mr. Hawk was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company B-735th Tank Battalion. His outfit saw action in five major campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the following decorations and citations: Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 campaign Bronze Stars.
He also volunteered his time at the Allen County Museum to help restore the Sherman Tank. He enjoyed assisting with the railroad displays at Lincoln Park. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Allen County Sportsman & Farmers Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #96, the VFW Post #1275, the National Rifle Association and the Tri-State Gun Collectors.
Services were held on Saturday, April 6 at Chiles & Sons - Laman Shawnee Chapel, with Chaplain Dick Coon officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites performed by the VFW Post #1275.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County Museum and/or the Lincoln Park Railroad Display.
