Willis was the son of Green B. Autry and Caroline Malcom Autry of Walton and Clarke County GA. He married Martha Matilda Adams,(b. 6 Jan 1843 Clarke Co, GA.) on 22 Sept 1861. The marriage of Martha and Willis was performed
by his grandfather, Primitive Baptist preacher George W. Malcom. He enlisted on May 7, 1862 in Co. C, 44th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, and was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee & General Stonewall Jackson. During the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, on 5-10-1864, while eating breakfast, he with others were captured by the Union Army, and he spent the rest of the war in prison, released on 3-7-1865.
