Prior to the Civil War, he was a clerk of the court of pleas in North Carolina, 1848 to 1856. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel of the 29th North Carolina Regiment and was appointed Brigadier General in 1863, serving until the war's end. In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congess and to the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1885.
