LUTZ, WILMER THOMAS "Bill"

Panel: 38W
Row: 012
Branch: ARMY Rank: MSG
Tour Date: 09/16/67 Casualty Date: 11/19/1968
Country: SOUTH VIETNAM Province: DARLAC Personal

When they first came and told the family they said that Bill had been killed in action, they brought his Purple Heart to my sister and etc. The Army came back the next day and said that Bill had been killed by Friendly Fire and took back the Purple Heart and gave my sister a Bronze Star along with his promotion.
The friendly fire was a soldier who was disgruntled with his superior officers and threw a grenade into the tent where they were having a meeting.
What happened to the soldier, not much!

You will find that he is listed as being murdered at Fragging in Vietnam!
"Murder of Sergeant First Class Wilmer T. Lutz (CID Report of Investigation 68-CID348-60141): "Investigation disclosed that about 2005 hrs, 18 November 1968, at the compound of Company B, 70th Engineer Battalion, Darlac Province, RVN, person(s) unknown detonated two hand grenades outside the unit orderly room tent, fatally injuring Lutz." An enlisted man was overheard saying "Lutz got it and I hope he dies" but no further evidence was found and the case remains unsolved"
