Wilson H. "Pap" Carper Sr., 75, Altoona, died Monday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center after a courageous fight with cancer.
He was born in Warriors Mark, son of the late Samuel and Mary (Harpster) Carper and stepmother Lucy (Steele) Carper. He married Joyce Ann Burk in 1963.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years; four daughters: Cathy Eckard and husband, Thomas, Susan Namenwirth and husband, Mitchell, Sandra Carper and Brenda Wertz and husband, William, all of Altoona; a son, Wilson H. Jr. and wife, Helen, of Altoona; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sophronia David and Alberta Huff, both of Altoona; two brothers: Earl of Tyrone and Howard in Maryland; and a family friend, Charles Clark.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Wilson was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean conflict from 1955-59. He retired from the McLanahan Corp. as a welder and assemblyman after 33 years of service. He was a member of Fort Apache VFW Post 8685.
Wilson enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking barbecued chicken and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg, followed by a funeral service at 6 p.m. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery.
