Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a recruit Private in Company B, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on February 23, 1864. He served through the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor in May and June of 1864. When the three-year enlistments for the veteran members of the 5th New Jersey expired in September 1864, the re-enlistees and new recruits like Private Ackerman were folded into the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Assigned to the 7th New Jersey's Company E, he served through the conclusion of the war, and was honorably discharged in July 17, 1865.
