Dwayne Collier Battle was the son of the late Maggie Lancaster Battle. He is survived by his sisters, Christina, Nicole, and Kimberly, and brothers, Joel, Tracy, and Marcus. He was a 1986 graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School. He joined the Navy and served 1987-1989, last rank as Fireman Apprentice (E-2). He was one of 47 sailors killed when 550 pounds of gunpowder exploded inside the No. 2, 16-inch gun turret on the battleship USS Iowa off Puerto Rico.
