Joel served as a Corporal, Company D, 108th New York Infantry during the Civil War.
He enlisted in the Army on July 25, 1862 in Rochester, New York for a three year term. He was mustered in as a Corporal.
He was captured by the Confederates on May 6, 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia and was sent to Florence Stockade Prison, Florence, South Carolina were he died while a prisoner of war.
