James served as a Musician with the 4th Delaware Infantry, Company D, during the Civil War.
His Obit notes the following: Relatives, friends and members of A. O. U. W., Wilmington Lodge No. 1, Encampment No. 34, U. V. L., Phil Sheridan Post No. 23, employees of the blacksmith shops, P. B & W. R. R. Co., and employees of Harlan and Hollingsworth blacksmith shop, are invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, 1202 Market street, on Wednesday morning, February 26, at 9 o'clock. Requiem mass at the Cathedral.
