Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 25th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 2, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D on September 18, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on January 10, 1863, he served through the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and in the May 1863 operations around Suffolk, Virginia, and was honorably mustered out on June 20, 1863.

He was then mustered in as a recruit Private in Company D, 33rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 26, 1864. He served through the end of the war, and was honorably discharged near Bladensburg, Maryland on June 2, 1865.
