Mr. John B. Bethune died very suddenly last night at 7 o'clock at his home, No. 1116 South Caldwell street. He had been in bad health for several months, but death came unexpectedly.
Mr. Bethune was about 60 years old. He was a native of Charlotte and had spent practically all his life here, wehre he was held in high esteem. He was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist church and its pastor, Rev. Dr. E. E. Bomar, will conduct the funeral this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence. Interment will be at Elmwood.
Mr. Bethune is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Fannie Earney of Lowell; by one son, Mr. Johnnie Bethune of Savannah, Ga., who will arrive this morning; by one daughter, Miss Madge Bethune of this city, and by four sisters, Miss Sallie Bethune, Miss Bessie Bethune, Mrs. McKinnon of this city and Mrs. Schofield [sic] of Columbia, S. C.
For many years Mr. Bethune was engaged in the grocery business under the firm name of Barnett & Bethune, the stand being on East Trade street, between Tryon and College, near Belk Bros'. present stand. Afterward the style of his firm was Bethune & White. More recently he had beenn in the employ of Mr. J. M. Sims in the latter's store.
