|Birth: ||1584, England|
|Death: ||Jul., 1657|
Born about 1584 (if he was "about fifty" when he got lost in 1634). Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the "Recovery." First settled at Dorchester; moved to Salem by 1636. Died at Salem between 3 Jul 1657 (date of will) & 23 Jul 1657 (date of inventory).
Married by 1636, Jane ____ (quite possibly Jane Clapp, daughter of Nicholas Clapp of Sidbury, Devon. "Jane Alderman" appears in the list of Salem church members compiled late in 1636. It is evident that she predeceased her husband since she is not named in his 1657 will.
John Alderman bequeathed the bulk of his estate to the children & grandchildren of Nicholas Clapp of Sidbury, Devonshire, leading to the suggestion that John's wife Jane was Jane Clapp, Nicholas's eldest daughter.
There are 3 more groupings of legatees who may also have been closely related to John Alderman or his wife, whoever she may have been. Israel Mason was JOHN MASON's only daughter with his unknown 1st wife; & this is presumably an important clue to her identity. The Pickerings & the Buffums may also have been related in some way.
