WILBUR TRUMAN CHILDS (53) Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearmont, MO for Wilbur Truman Childs, fourth of five children born to Guy Truman Childs and May Barbara Steiber formerly of Grand Rapids, MN on March 24, 1969.
He graduated from Grand Rapids High School, MN in 1934 where he was a top athlete in football, basketball and baseball.The love of his life from Grand Rapids High School died of cancer so he never married.
Wilbur served in the U.S. Army during WWII as did his brother Delbert Childs. Will suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome after WWII.
He was employed at the Blandin Paper Company in Grand Rapids, MN for many years where his father, Guy, also worked.
Will had severe diabetes and had to have a leg amputated. After his father, Guy, died in 1963 he remained living with his mother in Grand Rapids, MN for several years, then moved into the Wallin Nursing Home in Clearmont, MO and spent his last days in the same room as his mother. He died a short time later after his mother.
Will loved all sports plus fishing and hunting. He is survived by his sister, Esther Childs Rowe of Elmo, MO; Evelyn Childs Long of Chicago, IL; Florence Luella Childs Browne of Cleveland, OH; and 7 nieces and 3 nephews.
Funeral arrangements were through Atchison-Barr Chapel Burlington Junction, MO. He is buried beside his mother, May Barbara Steiber Childs in Clearmont, MO.
