George Wyllys
Birth: 1590
Warwickshire, England
Death: Mar. 9, 1645
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Connecticut Royal Governor. He served as Governor of the colony of Connecticut in 1642. Elected as one of six assistants to the general court, he served in that capacity from 1639 to 1641 and also in 1643 and 1644. Serving as Deputy Governor for Connecticut in 1641, he was appointed as Governor of the colony in 1642. Following his term as Governor, he became a commissioner from Connecticut to the United Colonies of New England. His home, which was located on Wyllys Hill in Hartford, Connecticut, was the largest in Connecticut at the time (today Wyllys Street in Hartford is named in his honor). On what was his property once stood the Charter Oak Tree, the official state tree of Connecticut, which was where it was said that Colonial Patriots hid the Connecticut charter from English agents trying to take it under the orders of King James II in 1686. His name also appears on the Founders Monument, which recognizes his prominence in Connecticut. (bio by: The Guardian (inactive))
