Arthur was the son of Anthony Dern and his wife Eliza Kuhl.

Masonic rites were held on Saturday, August 27, 1949, at 2 o'clock for Arthur Dern, local businessman. The body lay in state at the Georgas Funeral Home until Saturday morning, when it was taken to the Masonic Temple. Rev. N. J. Dechant officiated. Interment was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Mr. Dern died very suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. He was consulting a local physician and died at the office.

He was born on December 22, 1895, at Wausau, Wis. He received his education in the schools there, being graduated from the Wausau High School.

Mr. Dern's father built and operated the Northern Hotel at Wausau and Mr. Dern worked with his father there before and after World War I. He enlisted in the navy March 22, 1918, at Milwaukee and was discharged August 11, 1919.

In 1932 he came to Neillsville and purchased the Neillsville Bakery, which he operated until his death. Mr. Dern was a member of the Neillsville Chapter, No. 163 of Masons, Neillsville Chapter No. 66 of the Royal Arch Masons and Commandery No. 36 of the Knights of Templar. He was also a member of the Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post, No. 73.

He was married to Ruth Hubing March 1, 1945, at Waukon, IA. He is survived by his wife and two children, Anton and Carla Kay; one sister, Mrs. Bert (Regina) Sievert of Bloomville, OH and one half-sister, Mrs. Margaret Hull of Wausau. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Past Master A. L. Devos of the Neillsville Lodge, No. 163 of F. and A. M. took charge of the Masonic rites. Arthur Haugen was in charge of the Commandery escort. Members of the Commandery escort were Irvin Feirn, Herbert Neilson, James Musil, Alfred Kleckner, Lewis Bradbury and Harry Wasserberger. Masonic pallbearers were George Zimmerman, George Prochazka, William Ruchaber, William Gallagher, Al Covell and Donald Schwantes. Floral offerings were in the charge of Mrs. Donald Schwantes, Mrs. Lawrence Helwig, Mrs. Arthur Hubing, Mrs. George Hubing and Mrs. Charles Hubing.

Persons from out of town attending the rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Bert Sievert, Mrs. F. Fauber and Mrs. Charles Peck of Bloomville, OH, Mrs. Vila Peterson and Mrs. Mary Hull of Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Westphal and son, Monwell of Augusta, Mr. and Mrs. George Mellon and daughter, Lanette of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. George Forcey and Mrs. Lyd Forcey of Neenah.
