Birth: Mar. 18, 1858
Sullivan County
Missouri, USA
Death: Oct. 27, 1937
Sullivan County
Missouri, USA

Mark Pinkney DeWitt, son of Dr. Joel and Rachel Ann Mairs DeWitt, was born in Milan, Mo., the place now occupied by Mr. T. S. Poole, on March 18, 1858 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eula Shatto, Oct. 27, 1937 at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 9 days.

When he was about seven years of age the DeWitt family moved to the farm near Reger, Mo., where he grew to manhood. After attending the local schools he entered the Ottumwa Business College at Ottumwa, Iowa.

On December 28, 1883 he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Agnes Swanger. To this union four children were born, Eula and Joel now living and two infants preceding him in death. His wife also preceded him in death September 16, 1935.

Mr. DeWitt was especially interested in farming and stock raising, having served at that profession until in late years when he again moved to Milan.

Fifteen years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was also a member of Seaman Lodge No. 126 A. F. & A. M., being a member for 45 years and also a member of Milan Lodge No. 83 I.O.O.F., being a member for 38 years and being a past Grand.

Mr. DeWitt was the last of a family of seven children, 3 girls and 4 boys. Besides his daughter and son as mentioned he is also survived by six grand children, Joel DeWitt Jr., of Meadville, Mo., and John, James, Bertha and Rachel Shatto of Milan and two great grand children, Myron D. and Eula Margaret Jones of Brumley.

In his passing the family will lose a kind and loving father and the community a true and loyal citizen.

Services were held at the Shatto home, Friday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. E. W. Croy. Odd Fellow services were held at the grave in Oakwood cemetery.

We desire to express our thanks to our friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses and sympathy during the illness and death of our father and grandfather, also for the beautiful floral offerings.
