William "Letcher" finished Normal School at Big Stone Gap, took a business course at the University of KY in 1906, attended the National Telegraph School in Cincinnati, OH, in 1908, worked with the Civil Engineer Corps for three years, and was a bookkeeper for the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio RR at Dante from 1912 to 1914.
He was married to Coosie Evaline Rasnick at the home of her parents near Nora on August 29, 1913.
In 1922 he earned credits at Radford College to qualify for the Virginia Normal Professional Henry College and the University of Virginia. He taught 28 terms in the public schools of Dickenson County, spanning intermittent years from his first first school at Sandlick in 1903 until his retirement in 1952.
During the years 1937 - 1950, he owned and operated a farm near Honaker. His interest in gardening and maintaining his home continued throughout his retirement in Coeburn.
He served as deacon, teacher and Sunday School Superintendent of the Baptist Church and sang with family and church groups.
William & Coosie's children were: Oren, Vera Cynthia, Mildred Cornelia, Margaret Madge, William "Bill" Letcher, Jr., Anna "Faye" & Janice Marie Counts.
