Ellen married Leonard Burchett Self in Wise Co, VA, on December 22, 1874. They had 13 children; all were born in VA.

Ellen Margaret Counts was born at Coeburn, Va., May 25, 1854, and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Alma French in California, Mo. at 8:45 p.m., June 10, 1944, at the age of 90 years and 16 days.

She was one of eight children of Mr. and Mrs. John Counts. All have preceded her in death. On December 22, 1874, she was united in marriage to Leonard B. Self. To this union thirteen children were born. Six of the children have preceded her in death. The children now living are Mrs. Nannie Fraley, St. Paul, Va; Mrs. Zeura Hays, Versailles, Mo.; Mrs. Alma French, California, Mo.; Ezra Self, Versailles, Mo.; Gilmer Self, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Betty Langley, St. Louis, and Dallas Self of St. Louis. Also 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors.

She with her husband lived on a farm all their married life until her husband preceded her in death on December 29, 1936. While still a young girl she joined a Baptist church in Virginia. When she and her husband moved to Missouri she united with the Freedom Baptist Church where her membership remained for the rest of her life. Mrs. Self was a devout Christian woman and did all in her power to give her home and community a Christian influence.

Mrs. Self enjoyed good health most of her life until about a year ago when she had a stroke and was confined to her bed a great deal of the time since. During this illness she has been in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alma French of California, Mo."
