Nelson was born in New York, the son of Jonathan D. Carrier and Luania (Verplank). He pioneered to Michigan, and was among the first of many families of settlers (Cochran, Lawrence, Carrier, Cotrell, Ogden, Nicholas, Gillette, Chapman, Jocelyn, Drinkwater, Davis, Wiggins, Souter, Scott, Lyons, Robinson, Smith, Huff, Campbell, Horton, and Crofoot)to the Holland area from the north and east. He was a farmer. He was married to Ellen A., and their children are Eugene L. Carrier and Arthur Carrier.
