Rhode Island Governor. Immigrating with his family to Newport, Rhode Island, his father Nicolas Easton was an early colonial President and Rhode Island Governor. John Easton was a successful when he entered public service. He served first as Rhode Island Attorney General, (1656 to 1657) and then as the 8th Rhode Island Deputy Governor, (1674 to 1676). In 1690, he was elected as the 15th Rhode Island Governor, serving until 1695. During his governorship, he dealt with issues of the war that England was fighting with France, French privateers, a smallpox epidemic in Newport, charter issues to do with Rhode Island's militia serving in other colonies and the ongoing border line disputes with the neighboring colonies. After leaving office, he retired to a private life on his estate until death. During Governor Easton's administration, he was regarded as one of the best qualified and most efficient of the Colonial governors.
