As a member of the Georgia House of Representatives (1949-1965) and then Georgia's Attorney General (1965-1981), Bolton participated in over three decades of momentous change in the state of Georgia. In 1969, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution haled Bolton as "Georgia's Fighting Attorney General" for his stand against public corruption. His is the name that appears as the respondent in Doe v. Bolton, the companion case to Roe v. Wade, and his office was involved in many SCOTUS decisions handed down during the Warren and Burger eras. Bolton's courage was marked by his defiance of then Gov. Lester Maddox when he attended the funeral of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was decorated for his military service in World War II. A lieutenant with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, he was seriously wounded on April 06, 1945 during an assault outside of Paderborn, Germany. He mustered out of the service a captain. Bolton was the son of Herbert Alfred Bolton (1880-1933) and Eunice Blanton Maddox (1884-1948).
