Sgt Federico Guerra Borjas

Sergeant Federico "Rico" Borjas, of San Diego, California, a man determined to give of himself at every level, from community, to country to family. These were the values instilled by his family. In 1993, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was once selected as an Honor Guard for former President Richard Nixon. Rico also earned the title of "Iron Man" for his physical fittness during boot camp. In 1997, he he moved to San Diego County and began working for the sheriff's department, working as a corrections deputy. He was hired by the city of San Diego California Police Department in July of 1999, and served as a patrol officer in Southeastern, Southern and most recently Central Division. He was also a member of the Department's Color Guard Unit and the SWAT Team. While working he earned a bachelor's degree in legal studies from National University. Rico was well respected not only as a police officer and friend, he was devoted to his daughter, and they both were number one to each other. Rico signed up in the Army reserves in honor of his cousin who was killed in action in Iraq. In August 2008, he was activated as an Army Reservist and assigned to military duty in Afghanistan, assigned to 416th Civil Affairs Battalion, 351st Civil Affairs Command, San Diego, California. While working at a sentry point in Afghanistan, Sgt. Borjas was shot and killed in the Bermel District Center. His military awards include a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the Purple Heart. Federico is survived by his parents who reside near Orlando Florida, his daughter Evette, of San Diego, sister Aphelia Vega of San Diego and Aphelia's husband Daniel. Bio by Sue.
