Artist. William Victor Higgins was a painter of large murals as well as more intimate works of art. He was influenced by German styles; He was elected a member of the famed Taos Society of Artists in 1917. As an artist associated with this collective, he was the only Society member who had never done illustration work. There are ten murals decorating the interior of the Taos, New Mexico County Courthouse and he designed and created the largest painting. As a New Deal era artist, he is also remembered for having sought the office of Mayor of Taos, New Mexico -an election he narrowly lost. He died due to a heart attack. The man-of-such-creative-talent was buried in a cemetery which had served as the background for one of his prize winning landscape artworks. Higgins had been the last living member of the elite 'Taos Society of Artists.' (bio: Audrey Burtrum-Stanley)

Death can also be a dance. Each knows by heart its final steps. A life immersed in pain, perhaps, Too much controlled by circumstance, Has but to turn to come to rest.
