Rites Held for Tom E. Crowder

Funeral services fo Thomas E. Crowder. 89-year-old pioneer resident of the Thomas and Independence area, were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church with Rev. E. F. Haddon and Rev. Clyde Rodolph officiating.

He passed away early Friday morning following a brief illness. His wife had preceeded him in death only 16 days earlier.

Born in Tennessee, he had lived many years in the Independence community before moving to Thomas about five years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs Anita Williams, Walsenburg, Colo., and Mrs Jewel Jones, Thomas; two sons, Dr. V. F. Crowder of Weatherford and Elton Crowder of Thomas, and one sister, Mrs Katie Key, Edmond.

Burial was in the Mound Valley Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone's Funeral Home.

Thomas E. Crowder was born on October 15, 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee and passed away on December 18, in his home at Thomas following a short illness.

He survived his beloved wife of only 16 days.

He was united in marriage to Ida V. French on December 20, 1891 and to this union six children were born, two having preceded them in death, Eldred in 1941 and Myrtle in 1943.

He homesteaded at Elm in Custer county in 1893 and has been a resident of this county since that time. He carried the mail on a rural route ou of Elm with a pony and cart for a number of years. He joined the Masonic lodge at Aledo in the early day, and in 1916 this lodge was transferred to Custer City where he remained a member.

His survivors are, two daughters, Jewel Jones, Thomas and Neta Williams of Walsenberg, Colorado, two sons Dr. Verner F Crowder of Weatherford, and Elton E. Crowder, of Thomas, a sister in law Mrs Nora Crowder of Carnegie, a cousin Mrs. Laura Johnson of Crowell, Texas, 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
