Civil War Union soldier. On June 4, 1861, he enrolled and mustered in at Philadelphia as a First Sergeant in Company K, 27th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, for a 3-year term. He gave his age as 33 years. Although Samuel P. Bates's History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5 records that he deserted on January 27, 1862, it is likely that he transferred to serve as a Private in Company B, 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, for a 3-year term, and was discharged by General Order, June 6, 1865. This regiment was not authorized until September 1861, its command was not organized until January 1862, and the regiment was presented with the state colors by Governor Curtin at Harrisburg on January 28. Its men were recruited mainly from Erie, Warren, and Crawford counties, in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania.

Age 68 years. Worked as a laborer. Also spelled Bendle.
