John graduated from Earlham College in 1935 (the Depression years) and on 23 September 1939, Richmond, IN, he married Mary Maxine Wright in Richmond, Indiana. They had four children: John Wright Stevens, Marguerite "Margie" Wright Stevens who married Robert Hughes, Lawrence Wright Stevens, who married Sandra Jo Ward, and Susan Wright Stevens who married Thomas Schmidt.

He married second,May 21, 1983, Mary Edith "Meg" (Guckes) Harrell. They were married at Meg's home in Flowery Branch, GA where they lived until they moved to Atlanta, GA.

John had several jobs, but worked in Washington DC in the Dept. of Sanitary Engineering as a Wage and Hour Investigator until he retired on May, 1981 after 18 years, Civil Service Grade 12, Acting Chief of the Employee Relations Branch. John died of Alzheimer's disease and was buried with Maxine in Washington, DC.
