Newspaper Clipping, penciled 1919 (Probably from Hutchinson News)
GERMAN FRENCH: German French, veteran Hutchinson shoe merchant, passed away at his home on Avenue A. East, here last evening. German French, Sr. was one of the earliest business men of Hutchinson, and the first shoe merchant in this city. Mr. French came to Hutchinson from Chicago where he had been in the shoe business, and started his store here in the fall of 1873; and continued in the store until ten years later, when he went to the farm he had homesteaded near Partridge; where he lived until 1908, when he retired and came to this city to pass his last days.
German French Sr. was born at Sangerfield , NY. on February 5, 1846 to Stephen and Alice French. As a young man, he spent several years in Chicago in the mercantile business, and here he was married to Ann Isabel Calverly; and to them were born seven children, six of whom are still living. In 1900 Mrs. French passed away. He was again married in 1907 to Mabel Smith of Hutchinson. After going on the farm in 1883, Mr. French became greatly interested in the affairs of his neighborhood. To him belongs the credit of taking the first Census of Center Township.
He served many years on the School Board of the District; and his sterling
character made its imprint on the growing generations. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Bert and Richard French and
Mrs. Carl High of Partridge; William French of Hutchinson; German Jr.
and Fred of Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Short services will be held at the home on Sunday and the remains taken to Partridge, where a short service will be held at the grave.
