Lois M. Joy, 83, a lifelong resident of Elizabethtown, Indiana, died Friday, August 29, 2008, at 3:25 p.m. at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Mrs. Joy was a member of Elizabethtown Christian Church. A 1939 graduate of Azalea High School, she was retired from the Indiana State Board of Health where she was an inspector of sewage treatment plants throughout southern Indiana. She was a former technician at the City of Columbus sewage treatment plant and was the first woman certified to operate a local sewage treatment plant.

The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with the Rev. Connie Barr officiating. Calling will be from 10:00 a.m. to service time Tuesday. Burial will be at Springer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Awareness Association.

Mrs. Joy was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Bartholomew County, the daughter of Virgil and Nellie Barr Voyles. She married John B. Joy, Sr. on Feb. 7, 1942, at Elizabethtown.

Survivors include her husband, of Elizabethtown; sons, John B. (Linda) Joy, Jr. of Columbus and Michael D. (Barbara) Joy of Columbus; grandchildren, Robert and Jeff Joy, both of Columbus, Michael J. Joy of Elizabethtown, John Cash, serving in the United States Navy, and Joe Cash of St. John, Ind.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William Joy; a sister; and two brothers.

Michael J. Joy's children are Apple, Logan, and Payton Joy.
