Lavina was one of 10-children born to Frederick Beck and Elizabeth Beck nee Langhurst. Per the 1870 and 1880 censuses, the family lived in East Deer Township, Allegheny County; their post office was Tarentum, Pennsylvania. The names of her brothers and sisters were: Henry (circa 1859), Andrew (circa 1861), Josephine (circa 1865), George (circa 1867), Charles (circa 1869), Anne (circa 1871), Mary (circa 1873), Edward (circa 1874), and John (circa 1878). Although Lavina was born in the United States, both parents came from Germany.

The 1880 census has Lavina, age 17, living at 123 Madison Avenue, Allegheny City, and working as a domestic servant for Lewis and Rosa Waag and their 6-children. Lewis was a retired grocer. Their oldest child, Anna Mary, was the same age as Lavina.

27 March 1890, Lavina married Adolph G. Berger. At the time of their marriage, Adolph was living on Madison Avenue, Allegheny City, and Lavina was living on Federal Street, Allegheny City. Census records show that she had 4-children, only two survived. They would be William George (02 July 1891) and Mary Dorothy (19 June 1894). No information is known about the children who did not survive.

No record of Lavina could be found in the Fifteenth Census of the United States (1930). She died at 72-years of age from chronic nephritis and a cerebral hemorrhage.

Lavina's death notice was in The Pittsburgh Press of 26 June 1935 on Page 29.
