Albion - Terry L. Brazzell, age 57, died Friday, May 7,2010 at 8:00 A.M. at his home in Albion. Terry was born on May 30, 1952 in Washington D.C to John M. & Janet J. (Hyde) Brazzell.
He graduated from Central Noble High School in 1970 then went on to graduate from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1971. He served his apprenticeship at the Johnson Funeral Home in Plymouth, Indiana, and in 1977 returned to Avilla where he and his wife Jeanie purchased The Brazzell Funeral Home. In 1992 they purchased the Albion Chapel, and have owned them ever since. He and his wife built the first ground-up funeral homes in Noble County.
He served as the Noble County Coroner from 1992 until 2000, and Chief Deputy under his son John from 2000 to 2004. He was a proud, dedicated member of the Avilla Fire Department for over 35 years, elected to Fire Chief in 1979 and serving until 1990, and then from 1993 to 1996, and then served full-time from 2000 to present. He also served as the assistant fire chief for several years.
During his many years on the fire department, Terry was instrumental in many programs at the department such as the purchase of state of the art extrication equipment, new fire trucks and the new fire station in 1988. He was also the first fire chief to implement a training program and he held all the master firefighter catagories the state offered.
In 1985 he was the first firefighter in the state of Indiana awarded the medal of valor by Governor Robert Orr for saving the lives of 3 children and 1 firefighter in a May 1984 house fire in Avilla, the medal of valor is the highest award a firefighter may receive for bravery and very few of these awards have been issued out. In 1986, Terry was Indiana Fire Instructor of the year and in 1990 awarded Indiana Firefighter of the Year. Terry was the Indiana Firefighter Instructor's Association Volunteer director and 219 representative for many years. Terry was demonstrative in bringing 911 emergency services to Noble County and was later appointed to the Enhanced E-911 Board as representive to the Noble County Fire Chiefs.
Terry was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Avilla, both the Albion Masonic Lodge F & AM # 97 and the Avilla Masonic Lodge F & AM # 460, The Avilla American Legion Post # 240 SAL and a former member of the Albion Rotary Club.
In 2009, along with his son John, he was appointed a Kentucky Colonel, which is the highest civilian honor in the State of Kentucky.
On September 8, 1972 he married Jeanie (Burtch) Brazzell at the Saint Mark's Lutheran Church in Albion, she survives in Albion. He is also survived by 1 daughter and son in law, Jennifer J. and Matt Getts of Kendallville; 1 son and daughter in law, John A. and Megan Brazzell of Avilla; and 3 grandchildren; Jacob and Natalie Getts of Kendallville and J. Aaron Brazzell II of Avilla; his father, John M. Brazzell of Auburn; 1 sister and brother in law, Cheryl and Michael Beckage of Carmel, Indiana; 1 niece, Nicole Beckage of Bloomington, Indiana; and many friends that were dear to him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet J. Brazzell on March 16, 1996; his special aunt and uncle, Bud & Doris Brazzell; and his beloved Labrador, Katie Layla.
Terry was a loyal family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He served his community for many years and was always quick to lend a helping hand to someone. Terry loved talking and joking with people and had a special way of making you feel good even under the worse times.
Terry was an avid gun and knife collector and loved to read.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday May 12, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Brazzell Funeral Home, Avilla Chapel, 530 North Main Street, Avilla, Indiana.
The Rev. James Archambeault, Chaplin of the Kendallville Police Department will officiate the service.
Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. by the Albion and Avilla Masonic Lodges.
Active Pallbearers will be Kendallville Fire Chief Mike Riehm, Angola Fire Chief Mike Meek, Former Albion Fire Chief Gregg Gorsuch, Former Orange Township Fire Chief George Wolfe, Albion Firefighter Mitch Fiandt and Avilla Town Marshal Glen Wills.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Avilla Fire Department Medical Officer Roger Dancer, Avilla Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Hippenhammer, Former Albion Fire Chief Bob Beckley and Noble County Emergency Management Director Mick Newton.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to the Noble County Humane Shelter, The Avilla Fire Department or The Order of Kentucky Colonels.
