Mrs. Ida Mae Johnson Pettiford was born on March 18, 1912 in Essex County, Virginia to the late Phillip and Ada Johnson. On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, a sweet soft voice whispered, "It's time to come Home." She departed this life peacefully at Virginia Surgical Vascular Clinic in Richmond, Virginia.
Ida was the oldest of fourteen children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ada and Phillip, five sisters: Louise, Viola, Clara, and Marjorie; and four brothers: Willie, Phillip, James and Bernard.
She attended the public schools of Essex County, VA. During her childhood, she attended both Antioch Baptist and First Baptist, Loretto.
At an early age, she was baptized and became a member of First Baptist, Loretto. She loved attending church and because of family ties, she faithfully supported both churches spiritually and financially.
Ida was joined in holy matrimony to Willie Pettiford, a native of Warsaw, VA. To that union no children were biologically added, but through God's divine blessing she raised nine nephews and a niece.
Ida and Willie lived in Philadelphia for over fifty years. While there, she became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She served in many capacities: on the Usher's Ministry, Nurses Unit, Missionary & Flower Ministry and Bus Ministry.
Although she lived in Philadelphia, she journeyed back to her southern roots in Virginia to help her parents, family and church.
Upon the death of her husband, she moved back to Virginia. After returning, she continued to share much joy, happiness, and love with her family and friends.
She continued to support both churches faithfully until her health began to fail. While residing at the Carrington House in Tappahannock, she still came to Antioch occasionally to worship.
Aunt Ida was an amazing woman. She enjoyed laughing, talking, dressing up, wearing wigs, fancy hats, polishing her nails, and talking on the phone to friends far and near. She was always concerned about how she looked. She loved everyone and was always happy, never complaining about anything. She loved life and God blessed her with 96 wonderful years.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, her beloved daughter: Delores Nichols; granddaughter: Tajunna and three grandsons; four loving sisters: Minnie Reynolds, Bernice Beverly of Champlain, VA, Delores Green of Caret and Ada Mae Ashlock of Rexburg; two devoted nieces: Doreather Beverly and Etta Louis Reynolds; two devoted nephews: Everett and Stanley Johnson; two special friends: Levernia Veney and Louis Young; a loving nurse: Sue Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family members.
Funeral Service for Sister Ida Mae Pettiford was held Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1pm at Antioch Baptist Church, Champlain, VA. Pastor Daniel Goodall, officiated. Interment in the church cemetery.
