George Wackerlin, age 54, of Elburn, died unexpectedly at his home, Thursday afternoon, July 12, 2001, where he had just returned to recuperate following cancer surgery.
He was born September 25, 1946 in Aurora, the son of William and Pauline (Jakosh) Wackerlin.
George grew up in Aurora where he graduated from Aurora East High School. He worked with his father in the family business, True Value Motors, Aurora until 1971 when he began working for Ameritech. For nearly thirty years, George worked at the Ameritech offices in St. Charles and was legendary not only for his friendly nature but for his uncanny ability to remember names.
On September 7, 1968 he was united in marriage to Mallisia Parrish. They made their home in North Aurora until 1976 when they moved to Elburn. They were a loving couple, devoted to one another and to their children. After losing Mallisia to cancer in 1997, George discovered within himself, a veritable fountain of words and began to overflow with poetry. His pen-name became "Georgie Boy"- Elburn Wordsmith and he wrote about many people, places and things with words that ranged from humorous to serious and sentimental.
In his spare time, George loved working on cars. Restoring vintage vehicles to mint condition was a great source of pride and satisfaction in his life. He also was passionate about drag racing and spent many exciting Sundays at the RT 66 drag strip.
George was a member of St. Gall Church, Elburn where he enjoyed ushering but he was also one of many members of the Elburn Kountry Kettle "Breakfast Club". When George walked through the door, everyone knew him and he would likely stop to speak at nearly every table and booth before he left. At home with family and friends, George was especially famous for his gag gifts and practical jokes. He had a most unique sense of humor. You never knew where George's next laugh was coming from, but it was always good fun.
He is survived by his father and step-mother, William (Katherine) Wackerlin of Aurora; two children, Vicki (Charles) Oehler of Lake in the Hills, IL. and Scott (fiancee Krista Guithues) of Elburn, IL; four brothers, Clifford (Patricia) Wackerlin of Yorkville, IL., Franklin (Nancy) Wackerlin of St. Charles, IL., James (Theresa) Wackerlin and Bill Wackerlin, Jr. of Aurora, IL; two step-brothers, William (Lorraine) Draudt of Aurora and Wayne (Mary Ann) Draudt of Orland Park; many nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Ruby Keeton of Aurora, IL., and an unnumbered family of friends who will forever count it a privilege to have known George Wackerlin.
In addition to his wife Mallisia, he was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline (Jakosh); and his brother Jerome Wackerlin.
