The oldest child of Ben and Bessie Riddle (Maw and Paw), Vester or Brother as he was called by family, was definitely one larger than life character. His siblings were Grace (Mathews), Earl, LaDell (Poindexter), and Chris (Blackstock). The May 4, 1922 edition of the Bienville Democrat newspaper lists Vester as a winner of a spelling contest from Saline school. All the other kids were quiet and mild mannered, but Brother's personality made him a beloved figure in town and within the family. He doted on his paternal grandmother, Mary Riddle, bringing her ice cream and other treats through the end of her life in 1940.
Brother married Eula Harvey(later remarried to a Swanner) and they had the following children: Robert, Ruby, and Polly. They divorced and Brother went on to have a son, Don with Gladys Riddle.
Brother had two passions: pranking and the care of his family. If someone needed anything, Brother was the go-to guy in town.
His phone number was just one digit off from the Jonesboro taxi service, so it was in his devilish streak to have people wait outside for the cab that never came by. Of course the worse the weather, the better. Speaking of weather, Brother was terrified of tornadoes, so anytime the weather turned ugly, he was on the phone insisting his kin get to his house right away. He made sure where ever he lived there would be a storm shelter on the grounds.
In the late 40's Brother was in a catastrophic car accident that challenged him physically and mentally through the end of his life. His death left a huge void in the Riddle family, but the stories of his generosity, scoundrelous ways, and love of family are family legends.
