John Hobdy Martin ,76 of Hurley died at home of cancer on August 13,2011. He was retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding where he was an electronics engineer, foreman, and manager of the Land Based Test Facility. He also coach baseball and softball for many years in Slidell, LA, East Central, and Moss Point.
John was born February 15,1935 in Moss Point, MS, the son of Lee Roy "Pete" Martin and Annie Elizabeth Hobdy Martin. He graduated from Moss Point High School in 1953. He served as a radar maintenance technician in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958, including duty in Taipei, Okinawa,and the Philippines. After working for one year in Alaska for Philco Corp., he attended Mississippi State University and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1965. John worked five years as an electronics test engineer at the Boeing Michaud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, working on the Saturn V rocket program for NASA Apollo missions. He began at Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1969 where he helped develop the Land Based Test Facility (LBTF), was a foreman in the Electronics & Weapons Systems Department, and advanced to the position of Manager of Electronics Assembly and Test Facility of the LBTF.
John is survived by his widow Else Nygaard Martin, his high school sweetheart whom he married on January 29,1955, and had four children Brian (Kimberly) Martin of Washington, DC, Kevin Martin of Pascagoula, MS, Larry (Kim) Martin of Bay St. Louis, MS, and Laurie (Rolf) Hennig of Summerville, SC, eight grandchildren, Amanda Jobe, Shane Martin, Philip J. Loth, Ryan Hennig, Elizabeth Martin, Camille Martin, Emilie Martin and Lilianne Martin; and four great grandchildren, Victoria Brown, Ashlynn Jobe, Anna Jobe and Jacob Martin;his brother Robert Martin of Vancleave, MS, and sister Mary Ann Burson of Round Lake, IL.
A visitation will be held on August 17,2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS. A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home , Highway 63, Escatawpa will be in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Singing River Cancer Center;Singing River Hospice of Light or The Granly Danish Historical Foundation 808 Cane Brake, Ocean Springs, MS,39564; in memory of John Hobdy Martin.
