Evan Harris Humphrey was born on Tuesday, 6 March 1875 in Black Point, Marin County, California. He was the eldest child of Medal of Honor recipient Major General Charles Fredrick Humphrey Sr. and Juanita Da Costa Foster.

General Humphry was appointed to the United States Military Academy in 1893 and graduated from West Point in 1899. (1) "His military service included aide-de-camp to General Leonard Wood in the Spanish-American War and later, his chief of staff during World War I. three tours for a total of 11 years in the Philippines, tours in Hawaii and Cuba and the command of the 1st Calvary Brigade at Fort Clark, Tx. Brig. Gen. Evan Humphrey retired in 1939 as commander of the 2 Corps Area, Fort Jay, New York." (2)

Born and married into a military family, Evan rose to the rank of Brigadier General of the United States Army. His father Maj. Gen. Charles F. Humphrey Sr., brother Brig. Gen. Charles F. Humphrey Jr. and brother, Colonel Marion Bell Humphrey USMC. Also, Evan's wife Clara was granddaughter of two Civil War generals, daughter of a Major General and sister of a Major General.

Captain Evan H. Humphrey married Miss Clara Palmer Swift daughter of Col. Eben Swift and Susanne B. Palmer on Wednesday, 7 Jan 1914 in Manila, Philippines. (3) "The wedding was the chief social event of the season in the Philippine capital and was attended by hundreds." (4)

From this union were born four children, one son and three daughters;
*Evan Harris Jr (1914-1969), born at Camp Greg, Philippines.
*Jane (Humphrey) Miller (1915-1999) born in Corregidor, Philippines.
*Susanna Palmer Humphrey (1917-1930) died of leukemia at age 13. Born in Laredo, Texas.
*Jaunita (Humphrey) Growdon (1922-1985) born in Kansas.

Brig. Gen. Evan Harris Humphrey died at the age of 88 on Friday, 30 August 1963 at Fort Sam Houston, Bexar, Texas.

FUNERAL TUESDAY FOR GENERAL, 88
Funeral services will be held Tuesday in San Antonio Tx., for Brig. Gen. Evan Harris Humphrey Sr., (ret) who died there Friday. He was 88.

He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I.

Gen. Humphrey was born in Black Point, now named Ft Mason. His father Charles F. Humphrey, was a Medal of Honor {recipient} in a campaign in 1877, during the Indian war days.

Survivors include a son Evan Harris Humphrey Jr., of Miami, Fla.; daughters Mrs. Fred W. Miller, Elgin Air Force base Fla., Mrs. John S. Growdon, Lake Junaluska, N.C.; a brother Brig. Gen. Charles F. Humphrey Jr., San Antonio, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in San Antonio, TX for Brig. Gen. Evan H. Humphrey, USA (retired), aide-de-camp to General Leonard Wood in the Spanish-American War and later, his chief of staff during World War I. He died last Friday in San Antonio.

General Humphrey, 88 a native of California was appointed to West Point in 1893. His military service included three tours for a total of 11 years in the Philippines, tours in Hawaii and Cuba and the command of the 1st Calvary Brigade at Fort Clark, Tx. Brig. Gen. Evan Humphrey retired in 1939 as commander of the 2 Corps Area, Fort Jay, New York.

Survivors include a son Evan Harris Humphrey Jr., of Miami, Fla.; daughters Mrs. Fred W. Miller, Elgin Air Force base Fla., Mrs. John S. Growdon, Lake Junaluska, N.C.; a brother Brig. Gen. Charles F. Humphrey Jr., San Antonio.
Burial will be at 1pm tomorrow at Arlington Cemetery.
