Birth: Jun. 8, 1983
Bellville
Austin County
Texas, USA
Death: Aug. 6, 2003, Germany

Army Spc. Colunga was assigned to 4th Squadron, 2nd Armored Calvary Regiment, Fort Polk, Louisiana, as a helicopter tech. Colunga had been complaining of chest pains for a month and developed a 102-degree fever within a week of arriving in Kuwait. Army doctors diagnosed him with having acute leukemia. Colunga was initially evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq on August 4, 2003, and he contracted pneumonia soon after his airlift. He was then evacuated to Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center and later to Homburg University Hospital in Germany for further evaluation. He remained at Homburg until his death. Zeferino was a 220-pound former Texas high school tackle who graduated with honors from Bellville High School. He joined the Army shortly after graduating. He was nicknamed “Cowboy” because of a childhood habit of wearing a cowboy hat while riding a stick horse.
