James was born to Thomas Hamilton Boughner and Jane Eva Evans. He married Margaret Isabell Cork on Aug. 18, 1901, in St. Clair County, Michigan, and they had 11 children: Charles-Lawrence-Floyd-Clare-a set of twins (boy and girl)-Lee-Eva-Joseph-Dorothy-and Edith. In his life, he worked as a farmer, a milk delivery man by horse and wagon, and a shipbuilder.
